The mini kamado. (From Aldi)

Christmas Morning, 2021. Santa left the much sought after and annually sold out Mini Kamado under the tree.

These mini ceramic grills are available during May & June in Aldi & Lidl, and are scarce commodities, often selling out withing the first day or so.

Imagine my joy at unwrapping one of these little beauties come Christmas morning.

The first test was a seasonal Bratwurst cook. Simple comfort food and a chance to try the lighting method and set up.

From the instructions and my extensive online research, it is essential to avoid briquettes and firelighter products laced with any chemicals. The ceramic inner firebowl and cooking chamber can absorb the chemical taste.

So a 'wood wool' firelighter and some excellent Big K lumpwood charcoal, were carefully arranged to get the heat going.

The ceramic is so efficient at holding the heat, that with only a few handfulls of fuel, it was ready to cook after only 10 mins.

Temperature control is fairly straightforward. Having the lower vent full open allows for the use of the top vent as a 'brake'.

Closing the lid brings the chamber up to cooking temperature very quickly.

Despite it's mini size, there is room for 6 good size bratwurst, probably 4 good size burgers, and with some decent skewers, I suspect 6 kebabs.

The handle, stand and spring loaded lid hinge are rock solid once assembled.

Overall I am hugely impressed with the build quality, and the simple but gentle operation of this popular cooking method.

The mini kamado has a number of available mods, accessories and cooking options. Inevitably I'm off to make some purchases.

I'll post more experimentation soon.
